The White Sox moved to 1-2 on the young season with a thrilling 6-7 loss to the Culver City Marina Little League Giants on Sunday afternoon. Like their first loss of the season to the Yankees, the White Sox spotted their opponent a couple of unearned runs to start the game. With the loss, the White Sox fall two games behind the park leading Yankees.
Navari Julius started his second consecutive game on the bump for the Sox. He made easy work of the Giants in the top of the first inning; striking out the side on 14 pitches. The Sox also went quietly in the bottom of the first inning as Giant's pitcher, Carlos I., retired the first 3 White Sox batters.
Things went south for the White Sox in the top of the second as a combination of a single, a bad throw, a bobbled ball, and a double allowed the Giants put 2 runs on the board. Alonzo Billips hustled to a hard hit ball the hit the top of the fence in left field to hold the batter to a double. Navari persevered to close the inning with 3 more strikeouts bringing his total for the game to 6. That would close the book on Navari who went 2 innings, with 6 strikeout, 0 walks, 2 hits, and 2 unearned runs.
The White Sox bats remained silent in the bottom of the second inning as they could only muster one walk in the half inning.
Malik Cole made his debut on the mound for the White Sox in the top of the 3rd inning. The Giants scratched out a run on a walk, a single and a double. Malik settled in to record a strike-out for the first out of the inning. Pitching with bases loaded and one out, Malik was able to get the Giant's number 7 hitter to ground into the White Sox's first double play of the year. Grant Craddolph fielded a sharply hit ground ball up the middle, raced to second base for the force out, and fired to Lawrence Gilliam on first to complete the double play and squelch the Giants' rally. <Cue the Sports Center music> "Da Da Da….Da Da Da".
The White Sox mounted a threat in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a lead off walk by Lawrence. Cashion London laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Lawrence into scoring position but the Giant's were able to close out the inning with a strong play by their hard hitting 6'1 third baseman, Matthew.
At the end of 3, the Giants, led 3-0.
Malik stayed on the mound in the top of the fourth and delivered a scoreless inning. Cash assisted by snagging a deep fly ball to center field for out number 1. Malik collected his second strike out of the game for out number 2, and Shane Early handled a pop fly to second base to end the inning. That would end Malik's appearance on the mound with 2 innings pitched, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, 2 hits and 1 earned run.
The White Sox found their bats in the bottom of the fourth inning with an exciting 2 out rally. Shane got the rally started with a single up to middle and advanced to second and third on a Giants error and a wild pitch. Nathan Moore stepped to the plate and collected the first hit and RBI of his Majors career with a sizzling comebacker to the mound that bounced off the pitchers shin to score Shane. Robert Togia drew a walk to keep the rally going. With runners at first and third, Lawrence lifted a 1-0 outside fastball to shallow right field to score Shane, collecting his first hit and RBI of the season. With Jordan Strong at the plate, Robert was able to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3 apiece. Lawrence was thrown out attempting to take third base on the play to end the inning.
Cashion London took the hill for the White Sox to start the fourth inning. The Giants found their stroke in the inning and struck for 4 runs on 2 walks, a triple, 2 singles, and an error in judgment. Cash recorded out one in the inning with a strike out. Navari threw out a runner attempting to steal second base for out number 2, throwing to Grant who handled the throw on a short hop. Shane, who relived Cash in the inning, recorded out 3 with a strike out.
The White Sox attempted to mount another 2 out rally in the bottom of the fifth with Malik getting things started with a solid single up the middle but Giants closer, Guero, turned to an assortment of off-speed pitches to close out the rally.
At the end of 5, the Giants led 7-3.
Shane stayed on the mound for the Sox on the top of the 6th inning. Out one was recorded by Cash throwing to Lawrence on a ground ball to the whole at second base. After allowing a single, Shane battled back to record out 2 with a strikeout. Nathan quickly got the ball back in after a single to left to prevent a run from scoring. Out 3 was recorded by Grant throwing to Lawrence on a hard ground ball to shortstop.
Needing 4 runs to tie, Coach Barry gathered the team during the inning change for a quick pep talk. "Runs!!!" was shouted by all as the White Sox put on their rally caps. Navari got the ball rolling with a lead off walk. Shane followed with a hard ball to the whole to earn an infield single and move Navari to third base. Dathan Bailey sent a shot to the second baseman that was mishandled to reach first and score Navari. Robert collected and RBI on a comebacker to the mound to score Shane and move Dathan to third base. Lawrence went the other way with a pitch to collect his second RBI of the game with a ground out to first base; scoring Dathan in the process to make the score 7-6. Alonzo, who earlier had a 9 pitch at-bat, just got under one to fly out to the second baseman to end the game.
The Sox showed a lot of resolve to fight back in the game. In the end, the loss can be attributed to a couple of defensive lapses and a lack of early hitting. As evident by two one-run losses this year, this team is on the verge of great things and will be well seasoned for close games at the end of the season.

The White Sox earned their first W of the 2009 season with a 7-1 victory over the University Little League Angels. The game marked the first time that a Ladera team has visited the new University Little League field. The Sox would like to thank University Little League for the hospitality.
Navari Julius, in his first action for the White Sox this year, got the start on the mound for the White Sox. He cruised through 2.1 scoreless innings of work, striking out 6 and allowing 1 hit. He was relieved by Grant Craddolph, who was fresh off of the basketball court where he played a playoff game just before the 6PM start time. Tired legs got the best of Grant, as he would yield to Robert Togia to close the game. Robert delivered 2.1 innings of shut out ball, allowing 2 hits and striking out 6 to earn the save.
White Sox pitchers accounted for 13 of the 15 outs in the game with strikeouts. The other two outs went as follows:
Shane Early handled a pop up to short stop in the first inning.
Malik Cole threw to Grant at 3rd base to catch a runner attempting to steal in the third inning.
Offensively, the White Sox got off to a slow start as they were perplexed by the lefty motion from Angel pitcher, Jessie. Speedy lead off batter, Cashion London, laid down a great bunt down the third base line to start the bottom half of the first inning. He would move around the bases and score on a series of wild pitches and passed balls. Navari also legged out an infield single in the first inning but was left stranded on second base.
The Sox struck for two runs in the bottom of the second with center fielder, Dathan Bailey, collecting his second infield base hit of the season by legging out a ground ball to second base. Dathan is currently batting 1.000 on the season (2-2). Robert followed with a pop up double to shallow center field; advancing Dathan to third base. With Nathan Moore at the plate, Dathan was able to score on wild pitch. Robert moved to third on the play and Cash drew a walk. Coach Gilliam gave Cash the green light to try the "trip" on the way to second base play in an attempt to draw a throw to second base. Cash, in an Academy Award winning performance, not only tripped, but tumbled to second base, forcing a throw from the Angels catcher which allowed Robert to score from third base.
In the third inning, Grant launched a fly ball to shallow left field that was mishandled by the left fielder to get on base. Navari would collect his second hit of the day with an RBI double to left center field to score Grant.
Finally, the Sox added 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Robert collected his second hit of the day with a bloop single to right field. Next at the plate, Jordan Strong drew a walk to put runners on first and third. Malik stepped to the plate and delivered a 2 RBI triple to deep left field for his first hit of the season. Malik would score on the play on an Angel error at third base to close the book on White Sox scoring for the day.
Navari Julius earned the win for the White Sox as his pitching record goes to 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA-6.
Robert Togia earned the save.

In other league news, the Yankees outlasted the Braves today to run their record to 3-0 and take sole possession of first place.

The 2009 Ladera Little League baseball season kicked of Saturday afternoon with a thrilling contest between last year's first and second place teams, the Yankess and the White Sox. The Yankees employed stellar starting pitching and aggressive base running to earn a 5-4 victory over the Sox.
Robert Landry took the hill for the Yankees to start the game. After surrendering a lead off walk to White Sox second baseman, Cashion London, Robert settled in to strike out the next 2 White Sox batters. Out 3 of the half inning was recorded by Kelvin Murillo of the Yankees, fielding a broken bat ground ball to third base – throwing to Gary Mccoy at first base.
Veteran, Shane Early got the start on the mound for the White Sox. Shane retired the lead off batter on a weak comebacker to the mound – throwing the Jabril Geter at first base to record the out. The Yankees strung together 3 hits – singles by Kyle Thompson and Jonathan Phelps and a 2 RBI triple by Robert Landry - to take a 2-0 lead. Wiley White Sox catcher, Robert Togia, caught Landry being overly aggressive with his lead off of third and threw to Lawrence Gilliam at third base to record out number 2. Shane settled in to record the final out with a strike out.
The White Sox went quietly in the top of the second as Landry displayed his dominance on the mound, retiring the side on strikes.
Similarly, Shane got on track for the White Sox in the bottom of the second inning, racking up another K, and holding the Yankees scoreless despite the first of 4 White Sox defensive errors. Cash caught a fly ball to shallow right center field to record an out, and Grant Craddolph handled a squibber up the middle to record an unassisted out at second base. At the end of two innings, the score remained Yankees 2, White Sox 0.
Speedy rookie center fielder, Dathan Bailey, got things started for the White Sox by legging out a one out infield single that hugged the third base line. Cash followed with his second walk of the game. Grant stepped to the plate and delivered a 2 RBI triple that hit the right-center field fence to tie the game at 2.
Newcomer, Nathan Moore entered the game for Alonzo Billips in left field in the bottom of the third inning with Malik Cole moving to second base and Cash moving to center field. Shane continued his impressive performance on the mound. The Yankees struck for one run on a single up the middle by Justin and an RBI double by Landry. Malik handled a fly ball to second base and Shane snagged a well hit line drive up the middle to get out of the inning. After three, the Yankees led 3-2.
Landry shut the Sox out in the top of the fourth recording 2 strike outs. Derek Marshall accounted for out number three on a ground ball to first base off of Robert's bat.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jordan Strong replaced Dathan in right field. The White Sox stiffened their defense to hold the Yankees scoreless in the bottom of the fourth.
Things got interesting in the top of the fifth inning with a lead off walk by Malik. Landry settled in to record his 10th strikeout of the game. Cash followed with an infield single to Yankee short stop Jibri Walden. Jabril followed with a sharply hit ground ball to third base that was fielded by Jonathan Phelps. Jonathan stepped on third to record the force out at third and was then obstructed on his attempt to double up Cash at second. The umpire made the call and out 3 was awarded to the Yankees.
Shane returned to the mound for his fifth inning of work. Out one was recorded by Grant on a pop fly to short stop. After a walk, the White Sox suffered from it's fourth error of the game when a routine pop fly to third base was dropped as
Down 5-2, the White Sox dug deep in the final at bat of the game. Jibri Walden moved to the mound to close the game out for the Yankees. Grant drew a walk to get the rally started. Shane followed with a double to right field to score Grant. Shane was able to move to third base on the throw home by the Yankees. The ball became lodged in the backstop and Shane was awarded home plate to make the score 5-4 Yankees.
Final score – Yankees 5, White Sox 4
Winning Pitcher: Robert Landry
Losing Pitcher: Shane Early
Save: Jibri Walden
