Ladera 10/11 Allstars Game 5 Recap - Ladera Baseball - It's FANTastic!

Game 5 Recap

Ladera 6,  Malibu 4

Playing in their fourth game in four nights, Ladera outlasted Malibu 6 to 4 Tuesday night to earn a date with the undefeated West L.A. team tomorrow night.

Ladera jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first.  Centerfielder, Jordan Crisp (.526 BA, .571 OBP),  led off the game with a precisely placed bunt single.  Second Baseman, Darrien Geyen (.400 BA, .625 OBP), followed with a triple down the right field line to score Jordan.  With Darien at third, Lawrence Gilliam delivered a line drive double to right-center field to score Darien.  Lawrence now leads the team in batting (.667) and RBIs (8).  Finally, Elijah Hodge, who leads the team in on base percentage (.778) stroked a double to deep right center to score Lawrence and take the score to 3-0, Ladera.

Elijah, in his second start on the mound for Ladera, wasted no time retiring the first two batters on strikeouts.  Malibu rallied with two outs to push a run accross the plate on a double and single.  Ladera Shortstop, Grant Craddolph, took care of the final out of the inning by handling a ground ball to the 6 hole.

In the top of the first, Malik Cole drew a one out walk to get things going for Ladera.  Jordan reached on a seeing eye single in front of the mound to put runners on first and second.  Darien, who's bat has been on fire as of late, sent a hard ground ball single to the center fielder.  The Malibu center fielder made a spectacular throw to plate to nail Malik.  After a walk by Grant, Lawrence sent a blooper to shallow right field on an 0-2 breaking ball to score Jordan and Darien and take the score to 5-1 Ladera.

Malibu went quietly in the bottom of the second as Elijah collected his third strikeout of the game and Grant and Darien handled routine ground balls.  Ladera narrowly missed on a 4-6-3 double play attempt in the inning.

In the top of the third, Elijah drew a walk.  Kyle Thompson, playing in his first game of the tournament after returning from out of state, reached on a fielder's choice up the middle with Elijah being retired at second base.  Robert Togia reached on an infield bouncer to move Kyle to second.  Valance Sams and Jordan Crisp displayed patience to draw walks and force in Kyle for run number 6 for Ladera.

Feeling the threat of elimination, Malibu battled back in the bottom of the third inning to score one run.  Jordan relieved Elijah on the mound in the inning as he approached the 45 pitch count threshhold.  Kaelin Woodard stepped up big in the inning for Ladera; just missing a 5-4-3 double play on a sharply hit ground ball to third.  At the end of three, Ladera led 6-2.

Elijah collected his second hit of the game in the top of the fourth but was left stranded and the Ladera bats went cold.

Displaying an even greater sense of urgency than in the third inning, Malibu rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to shrink their defecit to two runs.  The inning started, though, with a Web Gem play by Darrien Geyen who went deep into the whole up the middle to backhand a ground ball and throw to Lawrence at first base to record the first out of the innig <Da Da Da!   Da Da Da!>.   Malibu displayed great resolve  in stringing together a double and couple of ground balls to score 2 runs.  Elijah turned in a huge play in left field; handling a high fly ball to end the inning.

Feeling the presure, the Ladera bats remained frigid in the top of the fifth as Malibu retired the side quickly to mount another offensive attack in the bottom half of the fifth.  With runners on first and second, Ladera called on their closer, Grant Craddolph to extinguish the Malibu rally.  Grant displayed great efficiency, striking out the side on 11 pitches (3 up 3 down); stranding two Malibu base runners.  Grant had his full arsenal of pitches working as he worked in and out with hard fast balls and used a power curve and sinker to score strike outs.

Needing an insurance run, Lawrence Gilliam continued his rally starting habits by hammering a 2 strike ground ball up the middle for a base hit.  Kyle Thompson entered the game to run for Lawrence.  Jibri Walden followed with a line drive single to left field to put runners on first and second.  Kyle and Jibri moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Elijah hodge sent a screamer to left field that would have scored 2 but instead was handled on a great play by the left fielder.  Malibu settled in to retire the next two batters and end the Ladera rally.

Grant returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game.  After surrendering a lead off single, Grant took control, striking out the next two batters on 8 pitches.  The final out was recorded on a great hustle play by catcher, Robert Togia, who raced from behind the plate on a mishit dribbler and threw to Lawrence at first base for the final out of the game.

Elijah earned the win and Grant earned the save with a dominating performance (facing only 2 batters in 7 innings of work and striking out 5).

You can find the play by play recap for this game here.

Ladera will continue their quest for a District 25 Championship when they face West LA on Wednesday at 6:30PM.

Ladera 10/11 Allstars Game 4 Recap - The Return of the Boom Bap

Game 4 Recap

Ladera 16,  Culver City National 2

The ping of the aluminum Demarinis and the crack of composite Combats filled the air Monday evening as the Ladera Allstars struck for 16 runs on 15 hits to stay alive in the Loser's Bracket with a 16-2 victory over Culver City National.

The offensive attack for Ladera was punctuated by a 3 run line drive home run by Lawrence Gilliam in the top of the first, and a lead off towering shot to left field by birthday boy, Jibri Walden.  The home runs were career firsts for Lawrence and Jibri.

Every Ladera runner reached base and all but one scored.  Clean up batter Lawrence Gilliam (.648 BA) was 2-4 and contributed 4 RBIs.  Jibri Walden, who leads the team in batting and On Base Percentage (.692 BA, .733 OBP), was 3-4 and scored 3 runs.  Darien Geyen was 2-3 with 3 RBIs.  Grant Craddolph was 2-3 and scored 2 runs.  Leadoff man, Jordan Crisp was 2-3 with 2 RBIs and scored 3 runs.  Elijah Hodge and Robert Togia contributed 2 runs a piece with Elijah striking for his second double of the tournament.  Kaelin Woodard and Valance Sams contributed a hit and a run a piece, and Malik Cole contributed an RBI.

With pitch count becoming an increasingly important factor, Ladera sent 4 pitchers to the mound.  Robert was solid in his second start of the tournament and earned the win.  Jordan, Elijah and Lawrence followed in relief.

Defensively, Ladera was led by Grant at shortstop and Darrien who turned in great plays at second and in left field.  Malik came up big in right field again handling a tricky fly ball.

With the win, Ladera advances to the final game of the Loser's bracket and will face Malibu in a revenge match tonight (Tue) at 6:30.

Ladera 10/11 Allstars Game 3 Recap - Sweet taste of Victory

Game 3 Recap

Ladera 7,  Santa Monica National 5

Facing elimination, the Ladera Allstars squared off against the Santa Monica National Allstars on Sunday afternoon in a rematch of last week's thriller.  Both teams battled hard with Ladera pulling out a come from behind 7-5 victory.

Jibri Walden got the start for Ladera on the mound.  Santa Monica started Mark Fuller.

Ladera tried to get things started in the top of the first with a walk by Darrien Geyen and a single by Lawrence Gilliam.  Both runners were left stranded as the Santa Monica defense buckled down to squelch the rally.

Determined to avenge their defeat, Santa Monica jumped out to a 3 run lead in the bottom of the first inning with a gutsy two out rally started by the hard hitting, Tom Fuller.  Fuller hit a 3 run shot against Ladera last week.  After a walk to Greg Melik, Robbie Kerr sent a blast over the left center fence to score 3 runs.  Jibri settled in to retire the side.

Elijah Hodge started the top of the second with a double to left field but was left stranded.  Ladera's defense held firm in the bottom to complete a scoreless second inning.

Ladera battled back to take the lead in the top of the third inning.  Lead off man, Jordan Crisp, got the ball rolling with a bunt single.  After a fielder's choice by Darrien Geyen, Grant Craddolph drew a walk to put runners at first and second.  Lawrence sent a ground ball to the shortstop to load the bases.  Jibri stepped to the plate and sent a  double to left field to score Darrien and Grant, moving Lawrence to third.  Elijah followed with a walk to load the bases.  Kaelin Woodard sent a ground ball to the left side to score Lawrence and make the score 4-3, Ladera.  Robert Togia added a "seeing eye" infield single to score Jibri.  Kaelin scored on a first and third steal play to bring the score to 5-3.   Valance Sams drew a walk but was left stranded as Santa Monica tightened the defence to end the inning.

Santa Monica struck for one run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-4.

Ladera got a single from Lawrence and a double from Jibri in the top of the fourth but was not able to push a run accross.

Santa Monica added another run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5.  Grant Craddolph took over on the mound for Jibri in the fourth.

With the score tied, Malik Cole led off the top of the fifth inning with a one out single to right field.  The speedy Valance Sams came in to pinch run for Malik.  Jordan followed with a single to right field to move Valance to third base.  Valance used his speed to score on a wild pitch, giving Ladera the lead.

Grant Craddolph retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth as Ladera entered the sixth inning with a one run lead.

Lawrence led off the sixth inning with a single to the left side.  Again, Valance was called on to run for Lawrence.  Jibri followed with a single to left side to move Valance to second.  Kaelin drew a walk to load the bases.  The ever patient, Robert Togia, drew an RBI walk to score Valance and give Ladera a two run cushion.

The Ladera defence took the field needing three outs for the victory.  Third baseman, Kaelin Woodard,  stepped up with a Web Gem of a play moving swiftwly to his left to cuttoff  a ground ball and throwing to Lawrence at first base; who stretched out his lanky frame to make the catch <Da! Da! Da! ... Da! Da! Da!>.   After two walks, Jibri turned in a Web Gem on a hard ball hit to the 5/6 hole.  He back handed it and flipped to Kaelin for the force out at third <Da! Da! Da! ... Da! Da! Da!>.   With the count 1-1 to the next batter, closer Grant Craddolph reached the 45 pitch threshold and Ladera manager, Barry Craddolph made a gutsy call to bring in Robert Togia to close the game on the mound.  With the crowd up at arms, the unflappable Robert Togia stepped to the mound and delivered to strikes in a row to close the game and earn the 2 pitch save.

With the win, Ladera sends Santa Monica home for the tournament and moves on to face Culver City National on Monday evening.

Ladera 10/11 Allstars Game 2 Recap - A Frustrating Loss

Game 2 Recap

Ladera 2,  Malibu 3

The Ladera Allstars came up on the short end of a 6 inning thriller against the Malibu Allstars on Saturday evening.  Malibu was led by pitcher, Skylar Radcliff, who held Ladera to 2 runs in 5 innings of work on the mound.  Ladera sent fireballer, Elijah Hodge to the mound for his first allstar start.  Elijah was strong with 3 innings of work, striking out 2 and allowing 2 runs.

The game was scoreless through 2 1/2 innings as both team's flexed their defensive muscle.  Grant Craddolph executed an exciting double play for Ladera in the second inning when he snagged a line drive and threw to Kaelin Woodard at third to double up a runner.

Malibu scratched out 3 runs in the bottom of the third as they capitalized on a Ladera error, a hit batter, and a couple of base hits.

Ladera battled back in the top of the fourth inning.  Clean up hitter, Lawrence Gilliam, doubled to left field with one out to get the rally started and reached third on a wild pitch.  Jibri Walden drew a walk and aggressively taunted the catcher as he sprinted around first to draw a throw to second.  The Malibu catcher fired the ball to the third baseman to nail Lawrence who was slow to get back to the bag.  A costly base running mistake as Elijah Hodge stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to left field to score Jibri.  The shot should have scored 2 runs which would have proven to be the equalizing run in the game.

Jordan Crisp took the mound in the bottom of the fourth and delivered 2 scoreless innings on the mound; allowing one hit and striking out 3.

Needing 2 runs to tie in their last at bat, Lawrence initiated a rally for Ladera with a lead off single up the middle in the top of the sixth inning.  Jibri followed with a single to left field to move Lawrence to second base.  Elijah drew a walk to load the bases and bring up third baseman, Kaelin Woodard.   Kaelin drew a 6 pitch walk to force in Lawrence and narrow the margin to one run.   Robert Togia stepped to the plate with the bases loaded.  Jibri sprinted home on a wild pitch and was called out on a controversial call by the plate umpire for out number 1.  Robert drew a walk to load the bases again but Ladera was not able to bring the tying run in and fell 3-2.

Darrien Geyen, Robert and Grant also had hits for Ladera.

With the loss, Ladera falls to the Loser's Bracket and must win 5 straight games (in 5 nights) to claim the title.
