I have received several questions on the various statistical categories that are tracked on our White Sox Stats site. I have included definitions for the stats below. Feel free to shoot me an email if you need clarification.
Also, note that the image that appears to the right of the players photo on the stats page is a hitting spray chart. It shows the location of all the balls hit into play by the player this season.
Batting Stats
G - Games played
PA - Plate Appearances - how many times the player went up to bat
AB - At Bats - If a player walks, is hit by a pitch, or sacrifices, no at bat is recorded
R - Runs Scored
H - Hits
2B - Doubles
3B - Triples
HR - Home Runs
RBI- Runs Batted In (or walked in)
TB - Total Bases - a measure of how many extra base hits a player has
HP - Hit By Pitch
BB - Base on Balls (Walks)
SO - Strike Outs
OE - Reached on error - The player hit a ball that the defense should have fielded for an out - but doesn't - so the player reaches on error
FC - Fielder's Choice - The player hits the ball and reaches base because the defense chose to attempt to get another runner on base out
SH, SF - Sacrifice Hit/Fly
SB - Stolen Base
OBP - On Base Percentage - the percentage of times a player gets on base - This is perhaps the most important youth league stat
Slg - Slugging Percentage - a weighted average batting average where home runs receive 4 pts, triples 3, doubles 2 and singles 1. This statistic is a measure of hitting power.
BA - Batting Average
Fielding Stats
G - Games
C - Total Catches - includes assists + put outs + errors
PO - Put Outs - the player catches the ball resulting in an out
A - Assist - the player throws the ball resulting in an out
E - Error – the player either missed a catch that should have been made or committed a bad throw.
PB - a catcher's stat - when the catcher misses a pitch that he should have caught and a runner on base advances.
SB - a catcher's stat - a base was stolen by the opposite team on the catcher.
DP - double plays participated in
CS - a catcher's stat - runners thrown out attempting to steal
FA - Fielding Percentage, the percentage of successful (non error) catches.
Pitching Stats
G – Games
IP - Innings Pitched
BF - Batters Faced
R - Runs scored by the other team while pitching
ER - Earned runs scored by the other team while pitching. Earned runs are runs that were not scored as a result of defensive errors.
H - Hits allowed
2B - Doubles allowed
3B - Triples allowed
HR - Home Runs allowed
BB - Walks allowed
HB - Hit batters
SO - Strike outs
B - Balls Thrown (non strikes)
S - Strikes Thrown – any ball hit into play is also considered a strike.
BA - Batting Average against
OBP - On Base Percentage against (perhaps the most important stat for a little league pitcher)
WP - Wild Pitches – a pitch was thrown such that the catcher could not catch it and a runner on base advanced.
GS - Games Started
W - Wins
L - Loses
Sv – Saves
ERA - Earned Run Average
