Game 17, 18 Mini Recaps - Taking the Good with the Bad

The White Sox had a busy weekend dropping a forgettable game to the City of Angels Little League Bears on Friday and pulling out 12-11 win over the Culver Marina Little League Giants on Sunday afternoon to avenge a prior loss.

On Friday, the CALL Bears sent staff ace, Jason to the mound. Jason dominated the Sox with 5 shut out innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and striking out 15. For those that need help with the math, he struck out the side in all 5 innings.

Jabril Geter garnered the only hit for the Sox by legging out an infield dribbler to the left side. He was also the only baserunner for the Sox on the day. One of the few bright spots for the Sox was the defensive play of Jordan Strong who saved 3 runs with stellar work in left field in the first inning. Malik Cole, Lawrence Gilliam and Jabril also had multiple catch days.

Robert Togia got the start on the mound and was followed by Malik, Lawrence and Navari Julius.

The Sox rebounded from Friday night's drubbing with a fast start against the CMLL Giants on Sunday afternoon. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the first, the White Sox bats caught fire. Cashion London set the tone with a lead off triple to deep left-center field. He would score on a wild pitch as Jabril drew a walk. Shane Early followed with an RBI double. Lawrence reached on an error and moved Shane to third with a ground ball to the right side. Nathan Moore collected and RBI with a ground ball to second base - scoring Shane and moving Lawrence to second base. Dathan Bailey was hit by a pitch. Robert stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Lawrence. Malik drew a walk to load the bases for Cash. Cash delivered his second base hit of the inning with an RBI infield single. Jabril reached on a fielder's choice on a play where the Giant's third baseman threw to a vacant second base allowing all 3 Sox runners to score (Dathan, Malik, and Cash). Shane delivered his second base hit of the evening with a ground ball between the shortstop and third baseman but was left stranded.

After one inning, the Sox led 8-0.

Shane got the start on the mound and worked two solid innings, striking out 2, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs. He was also the benefactor of a heads up play by Robert; throwing to Lawrence at third base to nail the runner on a "first and third" play. Shane also helped himself defensively with 3 assists in the two innings - all going to Jabril at first.

In the bottom of the second, the Sox struck for 4 additional runs. Lawrence drew a lead off walk to get the ball rolling. Nathan collected an infield basehit on a ground ball to the hole between short and third. Dathan followed with a walk to load the bases. Robert took one for the team and collected an RBI as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Likewise, Alonzo Billips was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and collected an RBI. Jabril continued his hot hitting with and infield RBI groundball to the shortstop. Shane moved his total to 3 for 3 on the day with an RBI single down the third base line. Jordan displayed patience at the plate and drew a walk. Lawrence grounded into a fielder's choice at second base to end the inning.

That would end the scoring for the White Sox and they were held scoreless for the final 3 innings. Dathan collected a two strike, one out ground ball hit to right field in the third inning, and Lawrence sent 2 out ground ball up the middle for a basehit in the fourth inning but both were left stranded.

Jabril, Lawrence and Grant followed Shane on the mound. Jabril worked 2 innings, striking out 3 while allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Lawrence had a shaky outing in the fifth inning, striking out 2, walking 2 and allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits. Grant Craddolph earned the save by closing the door on the Giants in the top of the sixth inning with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and allowing 1 run on 1 hit.

The Sox were generally solid in the field with stand out catches being turned in by Cash who tracked down a fly ball to shallow center field, Lawrence who went deep into foul territory to nab a fly ball, and Dathan who handled sharply hit line drive to center field to get the final out of the game. Robert put in a yeoman effort behind the plate; catching 6 innings.

The Sox have 2 regular season games remaining.

In other league news, the Braves rallied to defeat the Yankees last night to stay tied with the Sox for second place at 11-7.

See you at the park.

White Sox Game 15 Recap - Riding a 4 Game Winning Streak

On a day when Los Angeles baseball fans lamented the fortunes of their favorite team in blue, the Ladera White Sox brightened the day with a 10-1 victory over the University LL Angels.  The victory is number 10 on the year for the Sox who move their record to 10-5.   In preparation for a big game against the rival Ladera Yankees on Saturday, the Sox sent 5 pitchers to the mound.   The Sox need to win their remaining 2 Ladera Intra-League games and get a little help from the Braves to force a tie for first place in the Ladera standings.

The Sox took an early one run lead in the top of the first inning on as Grant Craddolph scored an unearned run when Navari Julius grounded to third base.   Lefty, Jabril Geter got the start for the White Sox on the mound.  The Sox recorded their 3rd double play of the year (3-6-4) - with Lawrence fielding a soft ground ball at first, throwing to Grant at second who then relayed a throw to first to the hustling Shane Early.  The Angels evened the score in the bottom of the first on a deep line drive double over the head of right fielder, Dathan Bailey .  Jabril buckled down to record out three with a strikeout.

In the second inning, the Sox raced ahead again as Lawrence Gilliam walked and the scored on a series of wild pitches and overthrows.  Lawrence took over for Jabril on the mound in the second inning and turned in a scoreless inning; striking out 2 and handling a come-backer to the mound to record out three.  The half inning was not without excitement as Lawrence walked one, and hit a batter.  At the end of 2, the Sox led 2-1.

Grant singled to get things started in the top of the third and moved to third on a ground ball by Navari.  Nathan Moore scored Grant and Navari on a ground ball to third base to move the score to 4-1.

Robert Togia took the mound in the bottom of the third inning with Malik Cole moving behind the plate.  Robert turned in an extremely efficient performance on the mound; retiring the side on 15 pitches  Navari handled a line drive to third base for out number one.  Robert recorded a strikeout and fielded a pop fly in foul territory to close the inning.

Angel pitcher, Jose, turned in a scoreless inning in the top of the fourth, striking out the side.

Grant relived Robert on the mound in the bottom of the fourth and turned in the third consecutive scoreless inning.  Jabril handled a ground ball to first for out number one.  Grant recorded a K for out number 2 and Shane threw to Robert at second base on a ground ball to third for out number 3.

The flood gates opened in the top of the 5th as the White Sox bats came alive.  Jabril and Grant set back to back doubles to deep left center field (Jabril scoring on Grant's).  Navari moved Grant to third with an infield single to second base.  Shane collected two RBIs on a bloop single to shallow right field.  Nathan worked out a walk as the Angel's changed pitchers.  Alonzo Billips kept the rally going by scoring Shane on a ground ball to second base.   Malik walked and Robert collected 2 RBIs on a line drive single to left-center field.  When the dust cleared, the Sox had put up 6 runs on 5 hits and led 10-1.

Jordan Strong made his Major's pitching debut in the bottom of the fifth.  After walking the lead-off batter, Jordan settled in and struck out the next batter to record out number one.  The lead-off batter moved around the bases to third on wild pitches.  Out number two was recorded by Shane who picked off the Angel lead-off batter attempting to score on a ground ball to third.  Jordan forced the next batter to pop up on a high fly ball to shallow right field that was handled by Lawrence.  Game over.  White Sox win.

The White Sox were happy to see Cashion London off the DL and back with the team.

White Sox Game 13 Game Recap - The Comeback Kids

When the Culver Marina Little League Dodgers match up with the Ladera Little League White Sox, you can be sure that you will see good pitching, solid defense, and a fiercely contested game.  Last year, the two teams played 2 extra inning affairs with one going 10 innings.  Tonight's game was no different, with the White Sox outlasting the Dodgers for a 7-6, triple comeback win in 7 innings.

Dodger starting pitcher, Brett Medford, perplexed White Sox batters with an arsenal of pinpoint fastballs balls that he moved in and out and tricky off-speed pitches for 4 scoreless innings.  In total he went, 4 and 2/3 innings with 5 strikouts; allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits and 3 walks.  The Dodgers staked him an early 2-0 lead off of a lead off single by Lucas and a home run to left center filed by Christian.  The White Sox continued to battle the injury bug as team batting leader, Cashion London (.516 BA, .622 OBP), was hurt on the first play of the game - chasing down Lucas' bloop single to shallow right field.  Cash would stick it out for the remainder of the half inning, accounting for an assist, before yielding to a severely twisted knee.  We wish him a speedy recovery.

Robert Togia took the mound for the White Sox for his second start of the year and shook off the early home run to deliver 3 solid innings of work.  He allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits and a walk.  Robert was relieved by Malik Cole who was solid in 2 scoreless innings.  He allowed no hits and struck out 4.

The Dodgers took a 3 run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.   White Sox center fielder, Dathan Bailey (.345 BA) ,  stirred things up with a hard hit triple to right center field.  The throw from the outfield found its way into the White Sox third base dugout, allowing Dathan to score on the play.  Robert drew a key 7 pitch walk after falling behind 0-2 on the count.   The White Sox called on the fleet footed Alonzo Billups to pinch run for Robert.  Malik stepped to the plate and sent a ground ball to the left side of the diamond to move Alonzo to third base.  Alonzo would ultimately score on the play due to a missed catch by the Dodger third baseman.  With the bases clear and one out, left fielder, Jordan Strong , stepped to the plate and sent a deep fly ball to left-center field that was snagged by Dodger center fielder, Christian.  With two outs, Grant Craddolph (.378 BA) collected his second hit of the day by legging out a ground ball to the third baseman.  Grant would use his speed to advance around the bases and score on a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an error.   The Dodgers sent Anthony to the mound to relieve Brett and collect the final out of the fifth inning but the damage was done as the White Sox evened the score.

The Sox sent staff ace, Navari Julius , to the mound in the top of the sixth inning.  Dodger slugger, Christian, stroked a line drive single to center field to lead the inning off.  Anthony laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Christian into scoring position. to set the table for Dodger first baseman, Micheal, who delivered an RBI infield single on a ground ball to shortstop.  Navari settled in to get the next two batters on strikes and stay under 20 pitches for the outing.

For the second time in the game, the White Sox found themselves needing a comeback to claim the game.   In a scene reminiscent of the White Sox late inning win over the LLL Yankees,  White Sox utility man, Lawrence Gilliam (.367 BA ) stepped to the plate and got the rally started with a towering double to straight away right field for his second hit of the day.  The White Sox would call on Alonzo again to pinch run for Lawrence.  Jabril Geter legged out an infield single to short stop but was unable to advance Alonzo who stayed at second.   Robert put the next pitch in play with a ground ball to short stop.  Alonzo was recorded out on the play but Jabril was able to score on a Dodger error.

At the end of six, the score was tied at 5, and the Dodgers and White Sox were headed to extra innings.

Grant took the mound for the White Sox in the top of the seventh.  The Dodgers showed great resolve as they again got the lead off batter on base with Alan laying down a great bunt down the first base line.   He would move to second base on the play on a White Sox error but was almost picked off moving to second base by a head's up play by Lawrence in right field.  Brett was hit by a pitch to get runners on first and second.  Alan and Brett would advance a base on a wild pitch.  With runners on second and third, Lukas delivered an infield single to third base to score Alan and give the Dodgers the lead.  Grant settled in to close the inning with two strikeouts and an unassisted out handled by Shane Early at third base.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Grant stroked a line drive to right field to set the stage for the Sox's third comeback of the game.  Navari, who is batting .478 on the season with a team leading .957 slugging percentage, came through with huge RBI double to left field, scoring Grant.  The Dodger manager issued an intentional walk to Shane to set the table for Lawrence.  Lawrence sent a ground ball to the right side of the diamond to move Navari to third base.   With two outs, Jabril stepped to the plate and delivered his second walk off hit of the season with a well hit RBI single up the middle to score Navari and end the game.

Hats off to both teams for a well played exciting game.

The game ball goes to Jabril Geter for the key walk off RBI.

The Web Gem of the day was turned in by Dathan Bailey with an exciting catch on a line drive to shallow left-center field.  Dodger starting short stop, Anthony, also played an excellent game at shortstop before moving to the mound.
