The White Sox had a busy weekend dropping a forgettable game to the City of Angels Little League Bears on Friday and pulling out 12-11 win over the Culver Marina Little League Giants on Sunday afternoon to avenge a prior loss.
On Friday, the CALL Bears sent staff ace, Jason to the mound. Jason dominated the Sox with 5 shut out innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and striking out 15. For those that need help with the math, he struck out the side in all 5 innings.
Jabril Geter garnered the only hit for the Sox by legging out an infield dribbler to the left side. He was also the only baserunner for the Sox on the day. One of the few bright spots for the Sox was the defensive play of Jordan Strong who saved 3 runs with stellar work in left field in the first inning. Malik Cole, Lawrence Gilliam and Jabril also had multiple catch days.
Robert Togia got the start on the mound and was followed by Malik, Lawrence and Navari Julius.
The Sox rebounded from Friday night's drubbing with a fast start against the CMLL Giants on Sunday afternoon. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the first, the White Sox bats caught fire. Cashion London set the tone with a lead off triple to deep left-center field. He would score on a wild pitch as Jabril drew a walk. Shane Early followed with an RBI double. Lawrence reached on an error and moved Shane to third with a ground ball to the right side. Nathan Moore collected and RBI with a ground ball to second base - scoring Shane and moving Lawrence to second base. Dathan Bailey was hit by a pitch. Robert stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Lawrence. Malik drew a walk to load the bases for Cash. Cash delivered his second base hit of the inning with an RBI infield single. Jabril reached on a fielder's choice on a play where the Giant's third baseman threw to a vacant second base allowing all 3 Sox runners to score (Dathan, Malik, and Cash). Shane delivered his second base hit of the evening with a ground ball between the shortstop and third baseman but was left stranded.
After one inning, the Sox led 8-0.
Shane got the start on the mound and worked two solid innings, striking out 2, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs. He was also the benefactor of a heads up play by Robert; throwing to Lawrence at third base to nail the runner on a "first and third" play. Shane also helped himself defensively with 3 assists in the two innings - all going to Jabril at first.
In the bottom of the second, the Sox struck for 4 additional runs. Lawrence drew a lead off walk to get the ball rolling. Nathan collected an infield basehit on a ground ball to the hole between short and third. Dathan followed with a walk to load the bases. Robert took one for the team and collected an RBI as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Likewise, Alonzo Billips was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and collected an RBI. Jabril continued his hot hitting with and infield RBI groundball to the shortstop. Shane moved his total to 3 for 3 on the day with an RBI single down the third base line. Jordan displayed patience at the plate and drew a walk. Lawrence grounded into a fielder's choice at second base to end the inning.
That would end the scoring for the White Sox and they were held scoreless for the final 3 innings. Dathan collected a two strike, one out ground ball hit to right field in the third inning, and Lawrence sent 2 out ground ball up the middle for a basehit in the fourth inning but both were left stranded.
Jabril, Lawrence and Grant followed Shane on the mound. Jabril worked 2 innings, striking out 3 while allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Lawrence had a shaky outing in the fifth inning, striking out 2, walking 2 and allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits. Grant Craddolph earned the save by closing the door on the Giants in the top of the sixth inning with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and allowing 1 run on 1 hit.
The Sox were generally solid in the field with stand out catches being turned in by Cash who tracked down a fly ball to shallow center field, Lawrence who went deep into foul territory to nab a fly ball, and Dathan who handled sharply hit line drive to center field to get the final out of the game. Robert put in a yeoman effort behind the plate; catching 6 innings.
The Sox have 2 regular season games remaining.
In other league news, the Braves rallied to defeat the Yankees last night to stay tied with the Sox for second place at 11-7.
See you at the park.
