Ladera Little League All Star Baseball - The Comeback Kids

Ladera continued its late inning heroics with an unbelievable 9 run 6th inning rally to come from behind and defeat Santa Monica West Little League 10-9 on Wednesday evening at West LA Little League.  The win keeps Ladera in the winner's bracket and advances them to the California District 25 Little League All Star Semi Final game to be played Saturday at 3PM against Santa Monica East Little League.

Once again, Ladera got off to a slow start - spotting Santa Monica a 2 run lead after the first inning.  Ladera battled back for a run in the top of the second on a walk and stolen base by Lawrence Gilliam.  Lawrence scored on a ground ball to second base off of the bat of Robert Togia.

Jibri Walden got the start on the mound for the White Sox but had to give way after two innings of work due to arm trouble.   Robert Togia worked the middle two innings of relief.   Grant Craddolph worked the final two innings and earned the win.

The Ladera defense, while not up to typical excellence, provided sufficient protection.   Plays of note included a 6-4-3 double play off of a dropped line drive turned in by Kelvin Murillo, Ricky Moore, and Lawrence Gilliam.   Kaelin Woodard showed off his new leather by snagging a screamer hit to the hot corner.   Lawrence, returning to his regular season position at first base, demonstrated a nice piece of glove work, picking a ball out of the dirt to save an out in the 5th inning.   Kelvin and Ricky were solid, filling in at shortstop and second base respectively for the middle innings.

Santa Monica continued to apply the pressure all night, scoring two runs in the 4th inning and 5 runs in the 5th inning.  Ladera mounted a mini rally in the top of the 5th inning when Malik Cole sent a two strike ground ball into right field.    With one out, Jordan Crisp continued the rally by legging out a ground ball to third base but the Santa Monica pitcher battled back; getting Kelvin to line out and striking out Grant.

"The Rally II"

Trailing by 8 runs, Ladera went to work in the top of the 6th inning with a single by Jibri Walden.  Lawrence Gilliam followed with a double to left center; moving Jibri to third base.  Ricky Moore sent a deep sacrifice fly to left field to score Jibri.   Robert Togia (.500 BA), who has been extremely hot of late, sent a ground ball single up the middle to score Lawrence to make the score 9-3.

Devin Martin sent a shot to the right side that was mishandled by the first baseman to reach base.   With runners at first and third, Kaelin Woodard delivered a line drive bomb that cleared the left-center field fence; 9-6.   The home run was Kaelin's second on the year.

Jordan Crisp and Kelvin Murillo drew walks to continue the rally.  With runners on first and second, Grant Craddolph tied the game with another monstrous fly ball that landed on the West LA Minor field.  The blast was Grant's 2nd of the tournament and 10th of the year.

With the score tied, Jibri sent a bloop single to right field and moved to second base on a sneaky stolen base.  Lawrence went down looking for the second out of the inning.  Ricky stepped to plate and delivered an epic at bat.  After reaching a full count, he fouled off pitch after pitch to stay alive.  On the 8th pitch of the at-bat, he punched a single through the right side for the go ahead RBI, scoring Jibri.  Ricky currently leads the team in batting with an .800 batting average.  Robert followed with a deep fly ball to the right field warning track for out number 3.

Needing three outs to secure the victory, Grant returned to the mound to face Santa Monica's 6 foot leadoff batter.   Using an arsenal of hard fast balls, he recorded the first out with a strike out.  The next batter reached on a walk.    Santa Monica's number 3 hitter stepped to the plate and dug in for a 9 pitch at bat, fouling off 3 pitches to stay alive and bring the count to full.  On the 9th pitch, he sent a chopper up the middle.  Jibri fielded the ball off the hop, stepped on second base, and threw to Lawrence on first base for the double play to close the game.

To quote one of the Ladera faithful in the stands, "for the second game in a row, Ladera took the lamb chop out of the wolves mouth".  Call it destiny.  Call it "¡buena suerte! ".   Call it what you want.  Ladera moves on in the winner's bracket.

The team celebrated with a Shakey's Pizza Party and will take the day off today.

The team eagerly awaits the return of Chris Henry off of the DL and Alonzo Billips from vacation.

White Sox TOC Game 1 Recap - It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right!

The Ladera White Sox blasted their way into the semi finals of the District 25 Tournament of Champions playoff with a 13-2 victory over the Malibu Padres last night at Culver Marina Little League.

Starting pitcher, Robert Togia, was nearly flawless on the mound through 3 innings yielding 0 runs on 2 hits and striking out 3.  Jibri Walden relieved him on the mound in the 4th inning to close the show.  The White Sox played stellar defense behind them; led by Grant Craddolph with 3 huge assists for shortstop, Kelvin Murrilo on second base with an assist and put out, and Lawrence Gilliam at first base with 6 put outs.

The big story of the day was the explosive offensive display put on by Grant Craddolph and Jibri Walden.  Both players sent 2 home runs out of the park.  Grant hit home runs on his first two at bats.  Jibri hit bombs on his last two, with the final home run going as a walk-off  (his second walk off home run of the post season).  The home runs place them in a tie for the lead for the home run title with fellow White Sox, Lawrence Gilliam.

Robert Togia had a key 2 run RBI and scored a run.  Lawrence and Kelvin scored two runs a piece, and Devin Martin and Nathan Moore scored runs.  Mathew Hamilton also contributed a single.

The Sox will play the winner of the Culver Marina Giants and the City of Angels Bulldogs on Friday evening at 6PM at Culver Marina.

You can find the play by play here.

"The White Sox Win The Pennant!!!, The White Sox Win The Pennant!!!" - We Pop Apple Cider

Sparkling apple cider rained from the sky as White Sox Nation celebrated a huge victory Tuesday evening on the Ladera LL major field.  The boys in black outlasted the Braves, 5-3, to earn the 2010 Ladera Little League Major Division Pennant.  The Braves, who were playing their 4th game in 6 nights, played valiantly and displayed great character and sportsmanship throughout.

"I can breathe now.", stated White Sox manager, Barry Craddolph in post game comments.  "That's a great season.  This is the best group of kids that I've ever dealt with, period.  I probably enjoyed this more than they did.  Now we just keep this thing movin'. I really appreaciate all the support; all the parents; that's what makes a difference."

Coach Gilliam in his post game address to the team added, "You played hard boys, and I'm proud of you.  As we move on to TOC, we are going to need the same kind of effort that you showed tonight.  If you attack your at-bats like you did in the 5th inning tonight, we'll make some noise."

Gilliam and Craddolph would later reflect on the 6 year journey at Ladera.  Craddolph, along with Braves' dad, Derek Marshall, started with a young Red Sox minor team in 2005 and went 1-19.   Gilliam joined the mix in 2006, to no avail, as the team went 2-18.   Hard work, perseverance, and 4 years later, the two guided an experienced White Sox team to 20-1-1 record this year.  "It's our time!", commented Craddolph.

"Our time, indeed.", added Gilliam.

Braves starting pitcher, Nikelle Galatas, was spectacular on the mound through 4 no hit, shut out innings.  He struck out 7 while walking only 2.  He benefited from a great double play by Derek Marshall on first base in the 2nd inning when Derek fielded a line drive shot and doubled up the runner at first base.  Jalen Johnson also turned in two great catches in center field.  Gary McCoy came through with a solid play at short stop with two outs and two on in the bottom of the 3rd to squelch a White Sox rally after a walk to Quentin Collier and a hard ground ball by Jordan Strong.

Nikelle was particularly impressive in the fourth inning when he faced the White Sox "Bash Brothers", Grant, Lawrence, and Jibri.  He took Grant and Lawrence to full counts before striking them both out and forced Jibri to fly out to retire the side.

White Sox starting pitcher, Grant Craddolph, was equally impressive for the Sox for the first 3 innings, working to the minimum number of batters and striking out 5.  The only blemish in the first three innings was an infield single by Malik Cole in the top of the 3rd inning.  Grant bounced back and  helped himself with his glove by initiating a 1-6-3 double play to end the threat.

In the top of the 4th, the Braves capitalized on 3 walks, 2 wild pitches,  and a base hit to break the scoreless tie.  Jalen Johnson got the rally started with a walk and a stolen base.  With Aaron Greenfield at bat, Jalen moved to third and then scored on consecutive wild pitches.   Aaron and Derek Marshall followed with walks to set the stage for Chris Henry who sent a seeing eye single just past Kelvin Murillo at second base to score Aaron and Derek and give the Braves a 3-0 lead.

Fighting momentum and a 3-0 deficit, White Sox catcher, Robert Togia, came through with a clutch single down the right field line to breathe life into the Sox. Coach Craddolph called on the speedy  Alonzo Billips to run for Robert who headed to the bullpen to warm up.  Veteran outfielder, Nathan Moore, drew a six pitch walk to place runners at first and second base.  Nikelle dug deep to strike out the next batter, stage for second baseman Kelvin Murillo.  Kelvin calmly stroked a clutch line drive single to left field to score Alonzo and Nathan.  Mathew Hamilton continued the rally with a well hit line drive the center field to move Kelvin to third base.  Devin Martin almost came up huge when he launched a hard line drive that was caught for the second out of the inning.

The Braves went to the bullpen and called on the hard throwing Derek Marshall to relieve Nikelle.  With runners at second and third, Grant Craddolph sent a towering fly ball to left field that just fell past the out-stretched hands of Gary McCoy.  Kelvin and Mathew scored on the play to give the White Sox a 4-3 lead.  Grant made it to third base on the play.   Team batting leader, Lawrence Gilliam (.569 BA, 6HR), stepped to plate and took an 0-2 breaking ball to left field for an RBI single.  Jibri Walden continued the rally with a line drive to left-center field but was cut down attempting to take second base on the hit.  The 5 run rally gave the Sox a 5-3 lead.

The resilient Braves refused to go quietly in the top of the sixth.  After 2 ground ball outs, Derek Marshall kept the Braves alive with a ground ball single to right field.  The White Sox went to the pen and called on Robert Togia to replace Grant who reached the 85 pitch limit.  Chris Henry worked out a walk and represented the tying run on first base.  Robert dug deep and forced a ground ball out to close the game and earn the save.

Victory celebration video can be found herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Md0Q-7l3ms

Hats off the the Braves and the White Sox for a well played Championship Game.  The Sox will move on to the District 25 Tournament of Champions Tournament and face University Little League at Culver Marina park this Saturday at 3PM.

White Sox Playoff Game 1 Recap - The Mark of a Good Team

http://home.roadrunner.com/~lgrhythm/WS10/LLLBvLLLW06-06-2010.HTMLThe White Sox entered the post season with a bang on Sunday afternoon with resounding 11-0 victory over the Braves.  The win places the Sox in the driver's seat of the double elimination Ladera Little League Major division post season tournament.  A tournament victory earns the winner a ticket to the Big Dance, the District 25 Tournament of Champions which starts Saturday at Culver Marina Little League.

Sunday's contest was a fiercely contested pitchers duel through 3 1/2 innings.  The White Sox sent Jibri Walden (7-0 2.23 ERA-6) to the mound.  The Braves countered with Aaron Greenfield who held the Sox to 1 run in an earlier contest.

Jibri was nearly flawless in the first inning, retiring the side on 11 pitches.  The White Sox defense was solid behind him as they converted two ground ball outs in the inning.  Braves second baseman, Dominic Johnson, reached base with a ground ball single past scrambling shortstop, Grant Craddolph,  but was left stranded as Jibri recorded his first strike out of the game to close the inning.

Aaron was equally proficient in the bottom of the first inning, making quick work of the Sox with 10 pitches; recording 2 strikeouts in the process.

In the top of the second inning, Jibri stayed on track striking out 2 and handling a come-backer off the bat of Nikelle Galatas.

The Sox scratched out a run in the bottom of the second when Lawrence Gilliam drew a full count walk.  Jibri followed with sharply hit single to left center field moving Lawrence to third base on the play.  With runner's at first and third, Coach Barry Craddolph gave the steal sign to Jibri to get the Sox out of a force situation at second base.  On the play, Braves catcher, Derek Marshall fired a strike to shortstop, Gary McCoy to nail Jibri at second base.  Waiting for the ball to clear the cut area, Lawrence bolted from third base and barely beat out the return throw from Gary to Derek to plate the Sox's first run of the game.   Aaron remained sturdy on the mound and closed the inning with two strikeouts.  After two innings, the Sox held a slim 1-0 margin.

Returning to the mound in the top of the third, Jibri continued to befuddle Braves batters with an arsenal of tailing fast balls, and deceptive breaking balls.  The first two Braves batters of the inning grounded out harmlessly to Lawrence first base.  Lead off batter, Jalen Johnson, sent a bloop single over second baseman, Kelvin Murillo's head for the Braves' second hit of the day.   Jibri remained focused and forced a routine ground ball to second, competently handled by Kelvin who threw to Lawrence for the final out of the inning.

For the second inning in a row, the Sox placed the lead off batter on base as the speedy, Alonzo Billips, legged out an infield single.   Playing the averages, Coach Craddolph called for Kelvin to move Alonzo into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.  Kelvin laid down a perfect sacrifice to move Alonzo along; and almost beat out the throw to first in the process.  Aaron dug deep and struck out the next two White Sox batters to strand Alonzo.

After 3, the score remained, White Sox 1, Braves 0.

The Sox defense maintained it's stingy disposition in the top of the fourth.  Kelvin handled a sharply hit ground ball off of the bat of Derek Marshall for out number one.  Aaron sent a sizzling ground ball up the middle; but was robbed of a base hit when Grant Craddolph turned in Web Gem play - fielding the ground ball a delivering a bullet to the lanky, fully stretched, Lawrence at first base for out number 2.  Jibri took care of the final out himself with a strike out.

White Sox waited with anticipation as the Sox sent the meat of the batting order to the plate to start the fourth inning.  Undeterred, Aaron retired the lead off batter of the inning on strikes.  White Sox clean up batter, Lawrence Gilliam (.571 BA), stepped to the plate and delivered a moon-shot solo home run that just cleared the left field fence for his league leading 6th home run of the year. The shot injected a shot of confidence and energy into the White Sox dugout as Jibri followed with his second basehit of the game.  With Jibri at first, catcher, Robert Togia, went opposite field for a single.   Aaron settled in to get the next batter on strikes for out number two.  The calling card of a good team is its ability to produce runs with two outs.  On Sunday afternoon, the Sox took a giant leap in the right direction.  Alonzo continued the rally with a walk.  In the process, Jibri scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.  Kelvin Murillo followed with an infield single that was barely knocked down by Gary at shortstop to score Robert.  Leadoff batter, Kaelin Woodard, showed patience at the plate and drew a walk to load the bases for Dominic Vasquez.  Falling behind in the count 0-2, Dominic put together an impressive at bat, displaying a good eye and fouling off pitches when needed to earn an RBI base on balls to score Alonzo.    The Braves went to the bullpen and brought in Gary McCoy to pitch to Grant.  Grant maintained plate discipline and refused to swing at low pitches.  During the at bat, two balls got past the catcher, and Kelvin and Kaelin were able to score on wild pitches.  Grant drew a walk to place runners at first and third for Lawrence.   Lawrence collected his second hit of the game with a screamer down the third base line for a double, scoring Dominic and Grant in the process; making the score 9-0 White Sox.   Needing one run to end the game on the mercy rule, pitcher Jibri Walden stepped to the plate and drilled a deep fly ball over the left center field fence for a 2 RBI walk off home run.  The blast was Jibri's fourth of the year.

Final score, White Sox 11, Braves 0.

You can find the box score here.

The Braves showed resilience on Monday evening as they eliminated the Dbacks from the playoffs with a victory on the arms of Jaylen Johnson and Dominic Johnson.

The Sox will face the Braves on Tuesday at 6PM for the Championship.

Many thanks to the Vasquez family for the awesome BBQ after the game.

White Sox Game 18 and 19 Recaps

Game 18

The White Sox took their record to 16-1-1 with a 10-1 victory over the Culver Marina Dodgers on Saturday afternoon.  The Sox used an explosvie 8 run 3rd inning and lights out relief pitching to earn the victory.

The Dodgers got out to an early lead in the top of the second inning with an RBI single by Louie to score Iverson.  The Dodgers' starting pitcher, Anthony, held the White Sox scoreless for 2 innings allowing only 2 walks and 1 single.

Devin Martin ignited a White Sox rally in the bottom of the third with a single after Kaelin Woodard walked.   Grant Craddolph followed with a walk.  Robert Togia delivered a huge blow with a double to right center field to score Kaelin, Devin, and Grant.  Nathan Moore displayed patience at the plate to draw a bases loaded walk and score another run.  Alonzo Billips, batting from the left side, also contributed an RBI single up the middle to advance the rally.   Kaelin, in his second at bat of the inning, punctuated the rally with a 3 RBI double to right center field.

Jibri Walden took over the pitching duties and held the Dodgers scoreless for the remainder of the game; going 4 shut out, no hit, no walk innings.

The Sox added 2 additional runs in the fourth inning.  Lawrence Gilliam drew a 7 pitch lead off walk.  Robert followed with a base hit to move Lawrence to third base.  Kelvin Murillo laid down a spectacular sacrifice bunt to score Lawrence.  On the play, Robert Togia also scored and Kelvin reached safely due to an error.  The play would close the books on the scoring for the Sox.

Defensively, the Sox were led by Robert behind the plate.  Jordan Strong, Nathan and Lawrence were sure-handed at first base and accounted for 9 put outs.  Grant, Kelvin, and Alonzo handled the middle infield duties with 7 assists.

The win completed a 3 game season sweep of the always feisty Culver Marina Dodgers.

Game 19

The White Sox pulled out a thriller in their Ladera field regular season finale against the Ladera Dbacks.  The final score, 17-10, is a poor indicator of the competitiveness of the contest.

The White Sox got off to a fast start with 6 runs in the top of the first inning with singles by Kaelin WoodardMathew Hamilton and Grant Craddolph, along with walks by Alonzo BillipsLawrence GilliamRobert TogiaJordan Strong, and Jibri Walden.

White Sox starting pitcher, Lawrence, who entered the game with a 0.0 ERA was shaky from the beginning, hitting a batter and walking 2 others while allowing a run in the bottom of the first.

The Sox added a run in the top of the second on back to back doubles by Lawrence and Grant to make the score 7-1.

The Dbacks fought back with 4 runs in the bottom of the second; benefiting from 4 walks and a single by Desean Green; taking the score to 7-5.

Again, the Sox added a run in the top of the third for a 3 run cushion.   Jibri singled and Quientin Collier drew a walk.  Kaelin delivered a ground ball to the short stop to score Jibri.

Dominic Vasquez contributed a single in the top of the fourth but was left stranded.

The Dbacks earned a run in the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Crisp scored on a ground ball to second base by Desean Green to make the score 8-5.

In the top of the fifth, Kaelin singled.  Nathan Moore reached on a fielder's choice to second base with Kaelin being nailed at second base.  Lawrence delivered his second double of the game to place runners at second and third.   Nathan used his quicks to score on a wild pitch.  After an intentional walk to Grant, Lawrence scored on a wild pitch to Dominic.  Kelvin Murillo also scored on the play after an error by the Dbacks.  After 4 1/2 innings, the Sox led 12-5.

The resilient Dbacks dug deep and unleashed a 5 run rally on the Sox in the bottom of the 5th inning.   Kyle Reece doubled and Christian Hooks, Josh Calcote, and Ricky Moore singled in the inning.  The White Sox called upon closing pitcher, Grant Craddolph to squash the rally.  At the end of 5, the score was 12-10 White Sox.

Feeling the sting of the Dbacks rally, the White Sox battled back with their own hit parade.  Jibri got the party started with a fly ball triple to deep left field.  Devin Martin collected an RBI double with line drive to left center field.  Kaelin scored Devin on a mishandled ground ball.  Lawrence completed his 3 for 3 day with a ground ball single to left field to score Kaelin.  Kelvin followed with a walk to set the stage for a 3 run bomb to right field by Grant.  The home run was Grant's 4th of the year and ties him for the team and league lead with Lawrence.  Just like that, the White Sox held a comfortable 7 run lead entering the bottom of the 6th inning.

Grant remained on the mound and closed the game with a "1,2,3" inning.
